Valuable legacy for future generations. The continued existence of the human species is contingent on the integrity of the world’s ecosystems. The gear that ensures the conservation of the environment relies heavily on the contributions of Costa Rica. We are a small country that is only 51,000 square kilometers in size, but we are home to more than 500,000 species, have 26% of our territory protected, and concentrate 6% of the world’s biodiversity. We have 900 species of birds, more than 35,000 species of insects, 240 species of mammals, and 1,600 species of orchids, of which 20% are endemic to our country.
Because of our location between the Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, we have an abundance of natural resources. We are essentially a land bridge between North America and South America, and as such, we act as a passageway for a great variety of different species.
Through the purchase of forests to ensure their protection and as a commitment to youth and future generations, both the government of Costa Rica and individuals and private entities have wholeheartedly embraced conservation as a cornerstone of sustainable development over the course of several decades. This was accomplished by purchasing forests.
