Kakao Jungle Cabanas is nestled within a wildlife reserve in Playa Cacao, across the bay from Golfito town. It offers basic cabins overlooking the lush tropical forest, the Gulf of Dulce and Golfito Bay. Each cabin features wooden décor and comes with a private terrace with hammocks. All beds have mosquito netting. Guests also have access to a shared kitchen, barbecue facilities and a communal terrace. Home-cooked evening meals can be provided for a small extra charge. The cabins are surrounded by tropical fruit trees, and the fruits are regularly used to add an exotic touch to meals and drinks. Kakau Jungle Cabanas can be reached by a path which begins on the beach and leads deep into the jungle. The surroundings are ideal for fishing, dolphin watching, kayaking, bird watching and hiking. Playa Cacao is a 15-minute boat and taxi ride away from Golfito Airport, and a pickup service can be arranged on request
• This beautiful farm is located 4 km west of the Golfito commercial free deposit, within the National Wildlife Refuge on the way to the Cacao town, in the first district of the canton of Golfito Puntarenas.

This is a comment from a bird watcher. Being up at the Kakao cabanas made me feel like I was off the grid, and I guess part of the reason is that from a utilities standpoint you quite literally are. All the power was solar and the water for the shower, sink and toilet are all rainwater. There’s not any hot water, but after a day walking around the steamy jungle I promise you that you will never wish for a cold shower more in your life. When I was bird watching I would tilt my head to look up in the canopy my hair would feel like a wet rag on the nape of my neck.
Overall, this was a very unique property, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be emerged in the wilderness in well-crafted surroundings. You are spoiled by the sheer volume of wildlife and everyone who was there during my stay received a lot of personal attention. It could make a wonderful vacation spot for people who are seeking something special, but I realize some people may not like some of the aspects I truly enjoyed. For example, not everyone gets really excited about having proximity to wildlife and I know many people who would find what I considered to be a therapeutic walk up to the cabins to be a barrier to coming. I think as long as you arrive at this place with the proper expectations.
